OPERA ACADEMY of CALIFORNIA (OAC) is pleased to announce Gems of Russian Opera - a MASTER CLASS for SINGERS that will be OPEN to the PUBLIC.

The class will be lead by YEFIM MAIZEL, the internationally renowned stage director from the METROPOLITAN OPERA, and conductor Alexander Katsman, alumnus of the SAN FRANCISCO OPERA’s Merola Program.

The Master Class will offer a special opportunity for opera lovers and newcomers alike to experience the behind-the-scenes work that singers, conductors and directors invest into the dramatic performance seen on stage.
The audience will experience a unique combination: STAGE DIRECTOR and CONDUCTOR leading a master class together.

Six chosen singers will each perform scenes and arias from Russian operas by Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky. Each performer will receive live one-on-one coaching from maestri Maizel and Katsman. Areas of focus will include understanding character and stage performance direction, with details about Russian history and culture.

Maizel and Katsman bring this music alive and relevant for a San Francisco audience.
Both studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, now renamed in honor of great Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov who was the conservatory’s director from 1871 until 1905.

Work in the Master Class will culminate with a PERFORMANCE on Sat. March 31, at MOST HOLY REDEEMER Church, 100 Diamond St (at 18th St.), in SF.
